there is no dissent about Korean folk-painting conveying traditional beauty and cultural affection with Korean¡¯s wish,
faith and desire of decorating one's life. Traditionally, folk-painting is used to decorate folding screen, which used as gift, furniture, or ornamentation; folk-painting was part of our ancestors¡¯ dwellings and their life. Although there is no precise evidence which supports the starting point of Korean folk-painting history, the study illustrates the comparable characteristics among the drawings of Neolithic times, pictures on ancient burial places and folk-paintings of Joseon dynasty. Base on these studies, the historians presume it has a history of 5,000 years. Folk-painting commonly does not have technical quality, such as composition or mechanism, given that originality, craftsmanship, and inspiration is well expressed, folk-painting was evaluated as part of traditional art. True beauty of folk-painting comes from unbounded and unembellished craftsmanship. In a similar way that modern artists stand along among the history of art, ancient folk-painters are incredibly inventive. They used various unusual kinds of materials to express their inspiration. They created specially treated paints or from natural recourses; not only paint-brush, hand, letter, tree-branch, even iron were used in Korean folk-painting. |
