and Japanese art pursues pureness and refinement. In contract, Korean art pursues the true beauty of nature. 3. Humorousness. Our ancestors believed that in the midst of weary life and hard living, art must offer joy and happiness to people. 4. Hopefulness. Folk-paintings are expressions of our ancestors¡¯ dream and hope. 5. Belief. Belief in human life and belief in art is foundation of folk-painting. 6. Kindness. There is no quivering and horrifying Korean folk-painting. It shows warmness of human heart. 7. Peacefulness. Korean traditional painting is dynamical expressed with rich color, strong lines, and rough shapes which derived from strong will of our ancestors that repulsed endless attack from foreign invaders; nevertheless, peaceful serenity can be found within. 8. Humbleness. It does not emphasize strong reasoning, it harmonizes. There is no inadequateness that can be found in folk-paintings in any circumstances. 9. Stylishness. Its improvisatorial characteristic does not come from careless expression. Balanced formation that comes from a current of one¡¯s inspiration creates harmonized style. 10.Enlightenment. In old times, number of folk-painters was illiterates, yet they were men with wisdom and they had made their peace with life. Enlightenment of life can be found in folk-paintings. 11. Rollicksome. Folk-paintings were not outlined or planed, it was impulsive art. It is rollicking creation by fanatics whom captivated by beauty of art. Without scholarly attainment, our ancestors pursued the true meaning of nature and loved moderation and morality of art; they conveyed such expression in their paintings with integrity. |
